WAKA : Wakaranai Magazine Mascot
Waka, a character I created in 2004 and allowed to be used as a mascot for Japan based Spanish language publication "Wakaranai" Magazine.
A popular free bimonthly magazine targeted to the Spanish speaking community in Japan. Published between 2004 and early 2010.
But since I wasn't paid for it and "Wakaranai" magazine has been discontinued, this character remains my intellectual property.

About and Around
Kiyoshi Kohatsu's work investigates the nuances of pixels through the use of stopframe motion and close-ups which emphasize the Symbiotic nature of animation in today's digital media. Kohatsu explores cartoon characters as motifs to describe the idea of imaginary self.
Using loops, non-linear narratives and slow-motion images, he creates meditative environments that suggest the expansion of animation as a form of modern art.

New MOMIJI seal
In Japan, drivers over the age of 70 are required by law to place a sticker on a visible area of their vehicles, mainly on a corner of the rear windshield.
The seal is called momiji mark and resembles a dry leaf. Senior drivers complain it diminishes their dignity and refuse to comply siting cases of being target of abuse, road rage by aggressive young drivers.
The Police who is in charge of all transit rules and regulations, aware of the calls from senior driver decided to have a contest calling for new elderly driver seal's designs, open to all residents of Japan.
My design and proposal is:
In Japan and many cultures around the world, the turtle is a symbol of longevity, wisdom and good luck. Some considered it slow and certainly they are when above the ground but some Sea turtles have been known to move through the water as fast as 55 km/h. The Sea turtles are endangered species and are protected in many parts of the world. My proposals for the new Senior Driver’s Mark with the sea turtle theme are meant to transmit the message that the driver is older ( Having lived a relatively long life) and the image of the turtle also represents wisdom and good luck. Drivers who spot cars with this symbol will be encouraged to be more careful and protect them and even attract good luck by doing so. Some senior drivers might not like to be associated with slow turtles but they also need to be reminded that sea turtles are very fast swimmers and can outrun sharks. I hope you enjoy the design and my proposal.
